Hartley Gilbert & Sullivan Society

Rehearsals begin in December and run through to till the show in May (with a break for Christmas). They are held on Tuesday evenings from 8 till 10 at Hartley WI Hall. The first couple of months are spent learning the music under the expert tutorledge of our MD Nick Noakes, Auditions for principles are held in early January and we start putting the show on its feet in February. Additional rehearsals for principles are held on Sunday afternoons and we have a full cast rehearsal on the Sunday a week before the week of the show. The weekend before the show is spent setting up for the show. Friday afternoon/evening is spent rasing the floor in the WI Hall to create the stage and tiered seating and starting to construct the set. Set building and light rigging continue on Saturday with all help gratfully welcomed. Costumes arrive on Friday for fitting and alterations over the weekend. On Sunday we run the show through on the set with lighting and sound for the first time, once with costumes and once without. Monday night is a night off and then Tuesday is dress rehearsal before performances from Wednesday to Saturday. After the final show on Saturday there is usually a party to let our hair down and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. Sunday morning at 10 is the set strike (attendance is compulsory) where take down the set put everything away, put the floor back and pack away the costumes to be take back to the suppliers. Rehearsals are always great fun and the week of the show whilst exhausting is always fantastic.
